On 18 September 2026, Greensand opened as the first full-scale offshore CO₂ storage site in the European Union. Led by INEOS Energy with Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden, the project injects and stores captured CO₂ some 1,800 metres beneath the seabed in the depleted Nini West oil field, about 250 km off the Danish coast. The first commercial phase can store up to 400,000 tonnes a year, with potential to grow to 4 to 8 million tonnes.
Bofort took part in the project’s pilot phase. As exclusive ISO tank provider to consortium member Blue Water Shipping, we supplied a large number of ISO tanks carrying liquid CO₂ from the INEOS site in Antwerp to Nini West aboard the adapted supply vessel m/v “Aurora Storm”. The first injection followed on 8 March 2023, a demonstration the partners described as the world’s first cross-border offshore CO₂ storage.
Congratulations to the Greensand partners on the successful pilot, which resulted in the construction of the SAGA CO₂ Terminal in Esbjerg, which was commissioned in June 2026 [link the words “commissioned in June 2026” to the post “Greensand Future: commissioning and purging of the SAGA CO₂ terminal in Esbjerg”] and inaugurated in September 2026.
