In May 2024, LNS Spitsbergen contacted Bofort to discuss our potential involvement in establishing a liquid biomethane supply chain to provide Svalbard Airport in Longyearbyen with liquid biomethane as part of a climate action initiative. The airport is operated by Avinor, which set out to cover its full electricity and heating demand there without fossil fuels.
Working closely with all parties involved, Bofort assisted in developing a custom-made ISO tank specification for this project. After thorough preparation, Bofort’s cryogenic ISO tanks entered operation in January 2026, when Avinor’s new biogas plant at the airport began supplying fossil-free power and heat.
Longyearbyen is located at 78 degrees north latitude, about 1,300 km from the North Pole. It is one of the world’s northernmost towns. The operating conditions are harsh and the logistics challenging.
LNS Spitsbergen has succeeded in establishing a safe and reliable liquid biomethane supply chain, and Bofort is proud to provide the backbone to it.
